Citizen Kane

June 1st, 2010

Citizen Kane was a farely good movie. I personally like old films so it suited my taste, but not only for this reason. I liked it because of the story. He was a man, the wealthiest in the world, and could have whatever he wanted, and in possesions he did. He lived his life, after the age of 25, the way he wanted he. He was able to spend his money in ways that he thought best, not what the bank thought. He looked for love, but never truely found it. His wives left him, and he seemed to always need to have a woman, perhaps because he didnt have a mother while growing up. But even when he did have a mother he seemed to be closer to her than his father. Kane ran his paper the way he thought papers should be run, and even made sure that what was in them was true. This being evident in the way he wrote the review of his wife for his friend. He could have lied and wrote how good she was, but that wasnt the type of man that he was. (I thought his wife wasnt too bad at singing, but then again what the crap do i know about opera?) Kane wanted happiness and sought long and hard to find it, but every time came up short. He realized that money couldnt get him what he truly wanted and in his last words he spoke of the last time that he was happy, riding his sled Rosebud. But this is kind of sad because while in his moments of happiness he was brought away to live a life that would make him very unhappy.

Like Willy Loman, Kane also cheated on his wife.

Willy Loman needs slapped with Haps PANGKAY RAANG

May 28th, 2010

So Willy Loman is a salesman who lived his life selling things. In the beginning he was an ok salesman, and then he just sucked towards the end. He thought he was much better than he actually was, and even led his life thinking that he and his sons were better than they were. He claimed to be well known all over, but really the only ones that would know he were the ladies. He was a player, but a very good looking one. His cheating troubled him for the rest of his life, and even led him to treat his wife badly because he didnt know how to deal with his feelings. Biff, his eldest son, was his star son. He thought that he could be great, but he never reaches his potential. After finding out about Willy’s extra woman Biff can never respect him the way he did before. In the end Willy kills himself, and I think that was the best thing he could have done. The dude was crazy, talking to himself in public places, causing problems for his family, and he wasnt bringing home the bacon. The only way he could help his family out of the tough time was by him killing himself, so good job willy. Now lets just hope that Hap, who worships the ground that his father walked on, doesnt fall into the same trap. I mean he already kind of is, “I’m going to get married,”…… what a stupid kid.

Venus Transiens

May 21st, 2010

The poem I believe has the best imagism is Venus Transiens. Mostly because it was about lesbians and how much they love each other. I like how she is saying that everyone’s opinion of what is attractive is different, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and the woman that she is with is what she finds beautiful. Its very cute, I like it. She uses the painting to point out that no one knew what Venus actually looked like, but at the time the painter created what he liked. The best line in the poem is “And were the painted rosebuds he tossed his lady, of better worth then the words I blow about you,” because I just picture a guy throwing roses in the face of his women, not very romantic. Another part I liked was the beach seen, mostly because I like the beach.

Reaction to Imagism

May 10th, 2010

I think I like imagism. It paints a good picture of what the author is trying to say, and what they want the reader to see. It makes things easier to understand and that works for me. Although it does make some things easier it kind of clouds what the true meaning of things are. For instance, say the author is talking about a poplar tree, now most people get the image of a tree, but no that is not what the author means. You really have to dig deep and know lots of good stuff behind the poem to get a good understanding of what is really going on.

What I Think About Howl

May 2nd, 2010

Well, hmm, it is definatley a different poem. I’m not quite use to reading things of this nature, so it was surprising at some parts. Me being as immature about things as I am, probably didnt help the matter, although I was right about the one part. What I think the poem was about, was a guy who did a lot of guys, and girls, and had an STD, hence all the burning all the time. I found the language in it strange, I wouldnt expect these things to be said out loud, or on paper, during this time period. Some of those things I don’t think I even hear today, but it isn’t as bad as I was expecting. Again this is another poem where I was lost so I had to read it through like three times to understand, but it was enjoyable to read. There is a lot going on throughout the poem, sex, politics, religion, and I didn’t like that. I’m the simple kind of girl, just stick to one theme per poem. And I think it would have been better if it wasn’t edited for content for my class. I need every word there to grasp what the authors cookin.

Reaction After Wasteland

May 2nd, 2010

Well my first reaction was right, it was a very long poem. And no I didn’t understand most of it while I was reading it. Couldn’t get a translator on such short notice, so my teacher had to do. That didn’t work out too well. Here’s a thought, since I don’t think anyone in my class knows any French do you think he just makes up words as he’s reading and is like ” yeah that’s what it sounds like” when really its not even close and the whole time he is BS-ing us. I think so. After reading through the poem and then going back to analyze, helped me to understand what was going on. I still don’t understand why poets have to be so imaginative with what their saying, really it would be a lot easier if for example he would have just been like death is everywhere, deal with it. But after reading through it and going through my thoughts I have decided that it really isn’t that bad of a poem.

Initial Reaction to Wasteland

May 2nd, 2010

The first time I saw the poem Wasteland my reaction was probably like others’, “Oh Crap.” It is very long and will probably be filled with a whole bunch of stuff that I have no idea whats going on. Having it broken up into sections may make it seem like it will be easier to understand, but I doubt that. With some of the words being in another language, I think its French, it makes me feel even more stupid then I did before. I can’t speak French, hell I can barely speak English, so I’m looking for a translator to let me in on whats going on, I doubt I’ll find one. But I have learned something new just by looking at the poem. I thought T. S. Eliot was a president, guess I was way wrong.

Larry King and His Divorce

April 18th, 2010

In the world of Hollywood it is no surprise that another famous couple has decided to end their marriage. This time the divorce involves Larry King and his wife Shaun. Since King has had a few divorces in the past you would think that he would have a prenup, but you my friend are sadly mistaken. In an article a source close to the couple says that King thought “this was the women for the rest of his life.” Seriously? Larry come on. Your 80, have been around quite a while, know all about gold diggers, and still didn’t get a prenup! I hope she takes him for everything he’s got. There is no way she was in love with the guy, perhaps the 26 year age difference could have pointed this out. She obviously was only with him for his money, and status and fell for it. I do feel bad, don’t get me wrong, but next time he decides to go looking for a wife he should stick to the senior center where he has something in common with the women.

Bartleby the Scrivener

April 13th, 2010

Bartleby the Scrivener is a story about a strange man who comes into the life of a well known lawyer. At the end of the story we learn why he acts in such strange ways, because he previously worked in a dead letters office. The story is told by the lawyer, giving the reader only a glance as to how Bartleby was acting, and not why. Throughout the story it is said of Bartleby to be staring at “Dead Walls” representing his previous employment and how he is feeling. These dead walls will get him no where, and represent his feeling as no one can get to him.

This story is placed on Wall Street, of 1853 of course. Through the short descriptions that are given the reader gets a feeling that Wall Street is very different then the one we know today. This wall street is not as exciting, not as busy, but still has a close proximity of the buildings like the one today. If the story would have been written in todays time period it wouldn’t have worked. People today would not have been as understanding, or caring, as the lawyer was. Patience is a virtue that is not found very often in society of my time, and luckily for Bartleby he was born a little earlier than I. The situation would have escalated much faster than it did in the story, and the way in which a solution was found would have been much more brutal. Also after Bartleby was taken to the Tombs, most people wouldn’t have kept visiting him.

A reader can take many things from this story, one being you mustn’t let things get you too down. After working some time in the dead letters office, Bartleby’s life changed. After seeing all the things that were meant to happen, but never did, Bartleby became depressed. He took this into his everyday life, and thought that everything in life was this way. If the reader takes this literally, like Bartleby did, it would make their life unhappy. The reader must take this, see that things sometimes do work the way they are supposed to. Also that if you just stare at walls all day, and not get outside of those walls, it will drive you crazy.

My Town is a How Town

March 30th, 2010

Many things about my town are unique, mostly because my family lives in it, but also the other residents make it quite fun. Gossip spreads quicker than lice and even if you don’t know that special someone your talking about, a person  you know does. Each person goes about their everyday doings, without a care as to the effect it may have on others. People here seem to be on a wheel, doing the same thing each day. Children that grow up in this town seem to never leave, and if they do, they always come back eventually. As time goes on, seasons change, people get older, the town never seems to change. Its main parts are always still here. New buildings may be built, old ones torn down, but it is still the same. Just like the town in the poem. Another part of the poem is the relationship between Anyone and Noone. Love relationships happen in every town, and just like the one in the poem, the go ignored. This may seem like a useless thing to focus on, but love has shaped us all in one way or another.

This poem stuck out to me the most because the first time reading it, it is just a bunch of fun words. And then it turns into a poem, one that is relatable to me. It doesn’t pick names, making the characters adaptable to anyone’s own interpretation.
